Since the beginning of the creative
process the desire to generate a green and continuous public space, developed
in several altitudes, has been present. In our point of view this kind of
space, associated with dynamic programmatic functions, would revitalize our
zone: an actual chaotic zone, with lack of public green spaces that can promote
the social interaction between the local communities and cultures. As thought appears the Earthquake: the concept key of our
intervention in one way as a phenomenon associated to a deep and necessary
transformation and in another as a generating principle of the architectural morphology.
The Earthquake, while a natural power, causes the vibration
of the land surface as a result of underground movements in the rocky plates
that provoke the release of great amounts of energy, modifying completely the topography
of the land. The Earthquake happens inside of our intervention zone,
transforming what shows itself degraded and adapting the urban structures that are
steady, like the circulation road that cuts our great zones of intervention in
two, and interrupts physically the geometry of the land movement.
Understanding the necessity that each plot have to possess
its constructive autonomy, for administrative questions, the movements provoked
for our Earthquake have in them basis the longitudinal geometry of each plot. Although
allowing the independent and progressive construction of each one of the
respective plots, we feel, has have been told, the necessity to unify all of
our intervention area, in an only green public space. Thus we created slope
plains (“slices of land”), with pendants alternated between the plots, to allow
the continuous circulation. After the Earthquake the life restarts and the
nature re-establishes her cycle making the green grass bloom in the new ground.
We create, thus, an ample public garden that, through its diverse altitudes,
allows to a more dynamic social interaction at the same time that allows
diverse points of view of Athens, including the glimpse of the Acropolis.
Athens was the most important focus
of the classic Greek culture and its inheritance is still sufficiently evident
in the city, through the innumerable monument ruins of the classic age. All the subsoil of Athens is rich in vestiges that had been buried
throughout the times by the land movements and erosion. Some of them are continuously “rescued” thanks
to the work of the archaeologists.
The concept that we applied to our
zone of intervention – The Earthquake - when provoking the already referred
landslide, discovered, metaphorically, parts of these archaeological ruins that
will constitute the skin of the buildings we proposed.
The deepening of the concept in this sense
is a result of the necessity that we feel in contextualize our proposal by associating
it to the classic Greek architecture and to the respective genius-loci of the
place. The materialization of our buildings re-interprets, through
its strong façades, the surrounding Athens landscape, the cultural legacy and
the architectural and historical lesson. It express and represents a current conception of living that is the
result of one process of memory activation and genetic reconfiguration of Greek
Architecture, translated in anastrophe and crystallized in solution that seeks to
respond innovatively to the demands of physical, cultural and social present.
