E589 is a boutique apartment building located only minutes away from the Melbourne CBD (Central Business District), Australia.E589 has been designed with an understanding for the way its residents live and interact. There are only 55 apartments over nine levels so this is a building on distinctly human scale. The apartments range from a breezy 42m2 to a generous 67m2The architecture plays with light effecting the interior living environment: By altering and adjusting the louver system on the external skin of the building the light becomes a responsive element that offers ever changing patterns through reflection and refraction. The façade comprises of a finely detailed louvre system which protects the interior while diffusing and mediating the sun as it passes through the external skin and into the internal spaces. This system enables the occupants to adjust the façade to suit their own individual taste while varying the amount of visibility and light which is transmits. The louvre system ensures the apartments stay cooler in summer and warmer and brighter in winter, thus reducing the overall energy bills. Residents can also use the louvres to increase privacy while retaining their views. When all the louvers are closed the building is a uniformed minimal cube, alternatively when all the louvers are open it becomes a see through glass building.
