Inspired by the immense speed of
evolution in major Chinese cities such as that of Beijing and Shanghai, my
plates/sculpture are meant to distort reflection/refraction through the
manipulation of its curvilinear structure and its formal composition. Although
the plate/sculpture itself is a static object, the reflection/refraction are
constantly changing through the movement of the plate and the evolution of the
city. The plate/sculpture becomes a distorted window in capturing our immense
appetite for variation in our city yet reminding us history need not to be
ignored.
These are individual
plates/sculpture I hand-crafted from a single piece of 37cm by 50cm 3mm thick
scratch resistant acrylic sheet. They are absolutely unique as each is hand crafted by myself and not
cast from any pre-existing mold. Each piece can never be replicated as it is
all done freehand and each acrylic sheet possesses unique tensile quality. None
of these plates can be recreated through glass or ceramic as the technique I employ
needs to be slow heating and applied in partial areas of the sheet which make
acrylic and the use of a heat gun unique to this combination in the
manufacturing process.
