SIBLING has created the premier store for multi-sensory concept label DUST in downtown Melbourne. Looking to the brand’s logo for inspiration — an abstraction of the classic symbol for the golden ratio — SIBLING used the grid as the main organising principle realised in three dimensions across the 280 square meter space.
The experience begins with an illuminated gridded steel framework — suspended above the entrance — that draws the curious passer-by to descend into the subterranean location. Once below ground the customer enters the grid articulated through the use of white steel framework, broken down as large immovable structures and smaller agile units that display DUST’s offering.
Almost every element is white or reflective within this vast space: prismatic lighting installations create white light fractals in a corner; luminescent surfaces serve as counters; LED screens play video installations in silent loops; a 3.6 meter tall infinity mirror greets the customer after their descent into the store.
After traversing the brightly lit space, the customer arrives at a burnished black monolith, both austere and evocative in a world of white. The finale is to step down into this form – set a few feet into the ground – with walls made from black glass almost as tall as the ceiling and insides made from multi-textured black elements such as rubber, leather and metal. The inky blackness of the space paired with the utilitarian materials make this void an exercise in tactile luxury for DUST’s capsule collection.
