Working in collaboration with Greenberg Consultants, CBT has developed a master plan for a 20-acre innovation district in downtown Durham, known as "Durham.ID." When complete, Durham.ID will eventually include one million square feet of office space, as well as retail space and 300 residential units. Envisioned as a downtown research hub, Durham.ID will be built around a vibrant core of life sciences and technology in partnership with researchers from Duke University, complemented by an array of arts organizations.
One of the greatest strengths of the Durham.ID Master Plan is its ability to build on the unique character and assets of Durham and the region. It presents a highly sustainable model to harness the energy and entrepreneurship of Durham’s growing startup community, the research and innovation of the nearby Research Triangle Park and the thought leadership and education of Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill to create a cutting-edge innovation district. With over 1 million square feet of new office and lab space and plenty of co-working and social spaces, Durham.ID will offer hundreds if not thousands of creative individuals and companies the opportunity to exchange ideas and pursue their entrepreneurial dreams.
The entrepreneurial and engaged spirit of Durham.ID is best captured by its common green, called ID.Central. Comprised of a series of cascading open spaces and designed to negotiate the grade differences across the site, ID.Central will tie together Durham.ID’s seven distinct campuses, or blocks. Through thoughtful landscaping and urban design this unique space will blend Durham.ID’s historic and modern elements to create a cohesive and collaborative community.
