Innovative AV/IT Teaching & Learning Space for Durham University.
Although essentially an internal refurbishment, the project required detailed development of a specialist facility which the University intended to roll out countrywide as a blueprint/prototype for use by other universities, and to utilise elsewhere in Colleges and department buildings.
PH Partnership developed the proposals with close liaison from the University IT staff members in outlining and interpretting all requirements.
Although a relatively small room, a successful proposal was developed to offer a social space which was specifically designed for tuition and group learning of a wide range of students groups, but using IT and Interactive AV as a basis for learning.
The proposals were developed by PH Partnership to offer a series of futuristic teaching booths distributed around an accessible social space. The proposals included vending machines and refreshment area.
Detailed design was developed in conjunction with IT/AV and shop fitting specialists. The booths were designed and detailed to be fully prefabricated and pre-wired. This encouraged quick and easy installation, allowing Plug & Play setup and drastically reducing construction periods. This reduced costs and allowed the University to implement the facility in a shorter period of time. The full facility was completed well in advance of the new academic year.
The whole scheme, including co-ordinated interior design, was developed in 3D, with Flythrough animation and photorealistic imagery. Facilities included touch screen interactive TV’s and adaptable heating, lighting, ventilation and IT specific to each booth.
Extensive use of fibre optic and LED lighting reduced running costs and maintenance while increasing the life-cycle of the installation.
The Booth concept also offered the ability to remove the demountable units and transfer to another location, while also reducing the overall refurb costs of the installation space.
The University were delighted with the completed installation.
