Rather than demolishing the beloved Old Post Office, the design carefully integrates this historic structure into the new facility. This approach creates architectural continuity along Main Street, allowing the library to feel like a natural evolution of the downtown fabric rather than an intrusion.
The layout centers on a Main Gallery that acts as the library's spine, connecting distinct zones for adults, teens, and children. The Children's area finds its home within the restored Post Office, a poetic reuse that gives young readers a sense of discovery in a building with its own story. Administrative offices occupy the southeast corner, strategically positioned to oversee operations and provide convenient access to the vehicular book drop. Meeting rooms and flexible spaces support after-hours community programming, extending the library's role beyond traditional book lending.
The building's exterior balances respect and innovation. A brick plinth grounds the structure in local material tradition, while two luminous glass lanterns rise above, signaling the library's presence and drawing visitors inside. This interplay of solid and transparent, historic and contemporary, creates an inviting threshold between street and sanctuary. Inside, abundant natural light floods spaces warmed by wood accents, creating an atmosphere that invites lingering. The design doesn't just house books, it fosters curiosity, connection, and belonging in the heart of downtown.
