Dry Shop, located in the rapidly changing Midtown area of Oklahoma City, is not a salon. It’s a blowdry bar and boutique – a place where customers can breeze in and breeze out, getting the latest styles for their hair and hippest fashions for their wardrobe. Dry Shop’s motto is “Look Like You Mean It.” The space needed to follow suit.
The concept was to utilize the quirky layout, industrial character and different levels of the existing raw space to organize the various functions of the DryShop and also to explore how the “bar” of the blow dry bar could be used to create unity between the various spaces. The raw space was softened with furniture, fabrics and color and life was given to the space with bold graphics and shapes.
A hot pink “bar” wraps around the shop, it’s function varies at it moves through the space from storage to counter, to railing to display shelf. The wall invokes the image of hair – some standard colors and some for those days when you feel like a different color. Large sheer drapes hang behind the blow dry stations, giving warmth to the space and also creating a slight separation between the blow dry bar and the shopping area.
Contrasting elements such as bright vs neutral colors and hard industrial surfaces vs soft fabrics are all tied together the meandering bold shape and color of the “bar”. A fun and contemporary atmosphere is created by combining various functions and spaces which are all open to each other and yet have their own distinct characteristics and space defining elements.
