In the history of architecture, new requirements and new technologies have created new types and spatial experiences. As example, airports, cinemas or other “recent inventions” that a few centuries ago were not even imagine. World and contemporary technological culture confronts us with new challenges that often respond with classic models that in most cases are unfit to interpret the future. DronePort is a new type of Skyscraper. A new infrastructure. A home for 300 drones that serve man-made space.
Today, increasing day by day the applications and use of drones for civilian purposes, opening a horizon largely unexplored. Started as a fad or a game, today the use of the drone is useful and sometimes necessary in several fields, such as: agriculture, security and control of the territory, the photographic, surveying, traffic control, packages delivery , telecommunication, rescue etc.
The Drone Tower is one of the first towers designed to be inhabited by machines, which play inside their “life”, or recharge, rest and maintenance, in complete autonomy. IS designed on the assumption that such a place in the next few years will be essential to any urban area of a certain size…as today highways or power plants. A series of slab prefabricated are overlapped with each other through a metal structure (reference to Pier Luigi Nervi projects). The tower according to the place in which it is built is designed to be rotated depending on the streets of the town (on lower floors) and in the directions of the principal winds (upper floors). Drone access is controlled by an “autopilot” that allows “docked simultaneously more vehicles. On each floor instead are automatons who perform the care activities of the drones and the displacement of any load to carry. DronePort is only the first in a series of countless skyscrapers, which will be in our skies. Not a utopian project, but the hope of discovering a new frontier for the architecture of the future city.
