Recently, much discussion in the design field has focused on the relationship between the digital
tools used to produce design and the computer numerically controlled tools increasingly used to
fabricate it. According to some, this relationship represents the ultimate triumph of the model and
the death of the drawing. Our proposal is to build a machine that will generate drawings in realtime.
The drawings produced shall articulate formal, spatial, and abstract relationships between
the line and the mechanism by which it is generated. The project will be displayed to the public as
part of a planned gallery show entitled, “Drawing with Machines,” which will showcase similar
projects existing and commissioned. The show will display drawings produced by our drawing
machine as well as the machine itself. The machine will generate new drawings in the gallery
continuously throughout the show. In this way, the drawings will be understood not only as
artifact but also as process.
