The Bournemouth Art Studio, designed by CRAB Studio with AKT II, creates different conditions of light within the same space. Within this thin steel shell of a building, the light is modulated through five openings, each with a different shape and size. The structure consists of a single smooth surface, built in monocoque construction. Constructed by specialist steel fabricator, CIG, very much like the hull of a ship, the structure consists of an 8mm doubly-curved external plate, stiffened by thin internal welded steel rib-plates, creating a 16m span column-free space.
