The project includes the conversion and rehabilitation of an existing protected building and a new extension with waiting room, ticket booths and other service facilities the station inhabits. The works on the station was part of a general effort to upgrade Strømsø Torg and station area.
The design aims to make a new connection between the new town square and the station building and to transform the station´s existing building mass to a new universally designed, modern and user friendly station that contributes to strengthen the public transport hub. The main element in the project is an illuminated exterior canopy and interior ceiling that carefully guides the visitors from the outside and through the station building.
The structural intervention consisted of establishing a canopy /ceiling that through lighting and ornamentation shall give the public associations of moving through a forest on a summer day with sunshine, and looking up in tree crowns where sunlight penetrates through between the branches. This element becomes a mediator between existing buildings and new features, while still being a manifestation of traffic flows and logical orientation.
