A stepped two-storey extension to a Victorian terrace house creating a new kitchen together with a roof terrace and an additional first floor shower-room. Our clients’ aim was for the kitchen to feel wholly integrated into the house without in anyway becoming pastiche Victoriana: painted scaffold boards were used for the floor and character of the room emerges as much from the clients’ weathered pendant lamp and their antique wall cabinet as from the new elements - such as the wrap-around bench seat containing a concealed industrial-grade radiator. The scaffolding aesthetic is carried through onto the roof terrace, with galvanised poles, stainless steel clamps and black-stained boards, together with perforated steel sheet balustrade panels chosen in response to the neighbours’ requirement for minimising any shading of their own terrace.
