Beginning as an investigation into the program of sleep within architectural and social settings, this focused in on moments of interface between architecture, furniture and the human body. One case study in that pursuit, Dormant uses the vocabulary of the fireplace to create space out of mass, behind the façade of convention.Because of constraints getting a 12ft tall, 12ft wide piece through the gallery doors, Dormant was engineered to come apart into sections. The mantel unbolts from its legs and the three pieces can be carried by one person. The front wall is bolted together with three pieces as well. The main chimney space comes apart in two faces and the rear shade adds lateral stability. Once all the pieces are on-site, the re-assembly process takes a total of 3 hours.
