The project is located on the north of Donghu Avenue, Yiling District, Yichang, and spans 1.1km in length. As the old city’s core avenue, the block design of this section demonstrates how to efficiently use ribbon space with different widths and functions under the limited conditions to create a safe, dynamic, and attractive continuous block space for the residents.
The conditions were challenging: shallow gas pipelines limited excavation and tree planting; most of the businesses on both sides are shopping, and the space along the street ranging from 3-10 meters needs to meet the functions of slow walking, leisure, safety enclosure,non-vehicle parking, and bus stops; ageing facilities along the street; corner parks at the north and south ends needed to have a unique design and aligned with the city’s development.
The design uses three strategies to address these issues.
Firstly, create a diversified functional boundary: reconstructing the boundary separating human, machines and vehicles with pixelated planting boxes, and organically integrate various functions into this boundary. It is not fixed, but changes scale and function with the scale of the sidewalk.
Secondly, define the block with local culture: create a 1.1km cultural walking zone with humanistic and natural stories along the Yangtze River in Yiling, and make this 1.1km a Yiling’s cultural exhibition corridor.
Thirdly, define two corners with fashion and vitality: two corners served as cultural corridor’s hubs and dynamic urban pocket parks for functional integration for people. The north corner, themed on Yiling Mountain and integrated into the Huangbai River greenway, is the most leisurely and fashionable understory rest space in the north; the south corner, themed on Yiling Water and aligned with the city’s future development, is a popular street corner amusement garden space in the south.
