The project site is located at the former Dong'an Gate corner in the eastern part of Shunchang County, Nanping City, Fujian Province. It sits at the intersection of three major roads, resulting in heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic, and is situated in close proximity to surrounding residential buildings. The immediate vicinity includes public amenities such as public restrooms and convenience stores, and is predominantly surrounded by aging residential communities. The area faces a severe shortage of public spaces and service facilities.
At the former Dong'an Gate corner in Shunchang's eastern urban district, the design team initiated an experimental construction using locally sourced engineered cedar timber. The result is a two-story modern timber courtyard building that embodies collaborative innovation across local construction, spatial design, and public service delivery. Unlike rural timber architecture, the project also faced urban-specific challenges, including strict construction codes and fire safety regulations for wood structures. This prefabricated wooden community hub, later named Dong'an Yi, consciously moves away from the cold rigidity and superficiality often associated with concrete-based architectural forms. Instead, it seamlessly integrates architectural space (hardware) with service design (software). The layout comprises three primary zones:Chuxin Courtyard for communication and community gathering, Laidushuba Reading Lounge for quiet reflection, and a flexible activity zone for engagement and events. As a contemporary academy-style shared community space, Dong'an Yi offers a tranquil retreat within a bustling urban setting. Since its opening, it has delivered remarkable social outcomes, bringing warmth, novelty, and joy to everyday urban life. It has quickly evolved into a beloved part of the neighborhood—a true "home nearby" and a living example of green public space construction through community co-creation. Metaphorically, Dong'an Yi is like a dandelion seed, quietly spreading and taking root throughout Shunchang's urban renewal landscape.
