Located at the corner of Fulton and Gough Streets near San Francisco's Civic Center, this new Boys & Girls Clubhouse replaces an aging facility in the Upper Haight, increasing access to its programs for youth and families throughout San Francisco.
The 84,000 sq ft center comprises recreational facilities, including a gymnasium and pool, educational facilities, and the administrative offices of the San Francisco Boys & Girls Club. Visibility and transparency – within the facility and between the clubhouse and the surrounding community – was crucial to balancing the client's priorities for security and exposure. A glazed, two-story atrium lobby provides views to major building zones while bringing ample daylight into the building.
The Fulton Street facade, essentially the public face of the building, features extensive glazing that brings daylight into the building on the upper floors. At the ground level, where the pool is located, translucent glazing and operable windows provide privacy while giving passersby a visual and audible impression of the excitement within.
