A high energy performance of the house is endowed by passive solar design through an appropriate orientation of the building, together with a careful design of the elements of protection of the gaps, and based on the needs of radiation for each season. High thermal mass materials store the energy collected through windows and greenhouse-galleries, and help stabilize the interior temperature. The indoor patios, shaded by vegetation and a movable slat system, provide fresh air that is introduced in the house and dissipates possible overheating. Also, the presence of water collaborates in refreshing the air by evaporative cooling.
The combined application of these passive design techniques can increase the percentage of hours in comfortable conditions, without using any active systems, from 15% to 60%.
Ecological design is complemented by strategies such as the selection of materials based on the level of environmental preference, rainwater reuse and the use of renewable energies which we can find at our reach, among others
