Pebble, or also recalled to as joyak-dol in Korean, is a familiar object to people bringing nostalgia. People use to rest along with the pebbles next to them in the river, play ducks and drakes, or collect them as if they were precious jewels. Pebble shaped stool, ‘Dol’, gives people a place to rest, a place to bring reminiscence.
Redefining Korean Traditional Joinery
Korean traditional wood furniture is made with the technique of joinery, not using other adhesives or connecting bolts. By this technique, they are more sturdy as well as showing the aspect of aesthetic. This artisan-minded joinery technique is also similar to the contemporary method of digital fabrication. As technology is being developed, digital computation methods and machines show more preciseness of design, where as digital fabrication method is structured similarly to the past. The ‘Dol’ project is to redefine Korean traditional fabrication method through the present day high-end digital computation and fabrication method.
