This project was a documentation model of a mixed use building in Genoa, Italy, by architect Luigi Moretti. The model was prepared for the Archivio Centrale Dello Stato to be displayed in an exhibit on Moretti’s work. Moretti was an Italian Rationalist architect whose work, which includes the Foro Italico (formerly Foro Mussolini) and the Watergate Complex. Because of his involvement in the Fascist movement and ties to Mussolini, his work has been given little attention since the the end of the Fascist regime. Now, however, Mussolini’s work is being given the recognition it deserves.
Moretti designed this commercial/ residential building in 1959, but it was never built. It is an example of Moretti’s interest in urbanism, in that by its form, placement and orientation, the building itself creates urban space in a dense urban context. The surrounding architecture is solid and traditional, and yet Moretti chose to design a glass curtainwall building much taller than its surroundings. Though his design may seem incongruent with its neighboring buildings, Moretti related his building to the others by aligning the vertical sequence of floors with the openings of the surrounding buildings. Also, in keeping with the traditional method of aesthetically separating interior functions on the facade in Italian palazzi, Moretti designed a gap in the facade between the office levels and the apartments above.
