This Cabrillo annex space was an offsite addition to an existing headquarters for DocMagic Inc. whose headquarters are around the corner, within a 5 minute walk. Based in Torrance California, DocMagic is a company that invented an online technology solution for the Mortgage industry and has subsequently become a leader in that industry. Their headquarters space is at the forefront of modern design and won a National AIA Honors award when it was built.
This annex space provides over 10,000 additional square feet to the company’s capacity and houses their print processing center, a logical subdivision from the main headquarters. This is where mortgage papers are processed, printed and distributed – a critical function of the company, where mistakes are not tolerated. Our approach was to create a workspace that— although raw in its use of materials—would be clean and ordered to an almost clinical level, reflecting the attitude towards the work being completed here. Crisp lines and a monochromatic palette distinguish this space.
Custom steel plate stairs are painted black and wrapped in a woven stainless netting. These connect the two floors: the ground floor being the print processing plant and the upper floor general office space and conference room. Minimalist details and material selections are incorporated throughout and juxtaposition against raw concrete, tube lights and acoustic foam pyramid ceilings.
The exterior of the building was originally a 1950’s metal panel ‘Googie’ façade. We re-clad this in custom perforated metal panels with integrated color-changing LED lighting. The black glass on the lower level maintains the security and privacy needed for the business function but allows views out to the main street that this overlooks in downtown Torrance.
