The concept behind the Istanbul Disaster Prevention and Education Centre is to increase the awareness of the community for the prevention of disasters and to educate people how to deal with them. This is a new type of building for the territory of Istanbul and it brings particular message to the society.Natural disasters are caused by the basic elements/powers - fire, air, earth, water. Humans can be added to the list because often man through his actions can have a negative effect on nature. As a result these changing elements become five in total. The rеgular pentagon symbolizes the harmony between man and the elements. Therefore we chose it as a starting point for our form shaping. The regular pentagon can be divided into sectors (golden triangles) from which two forms are derived: "Kite" and "Dart". They are the main components of a peculiar type of mosaic – Girih, typical for Turkey and the islamic world. Mathematicians noticed this and in 1974 Roger Penrose proved that the whole plain can be covered with these two forms and that this tilling is aperiodic.Вдъхновени от символиката на 5-те стихии и от и от the girih tilling, ние проектирахме сградата на този тип формообразуване. Установихмe, че той ни дава следните предимства:Inspired by the five elements symbolism and by the Girih tilling we designed the building using this form shaping. We established that it brings us the following advantages:1.It symbolizes the elements and their connection to humans2.By using Girih we pay attention to the cultural identity of the environment 3.Rich variety of shapes which can be achieved by using only two elementsOur decision to use this particular form shaping brings us both a variety of potential choices and an identity to the respective form (building). As a result this building blends in well with the concept of being a cultural site for the city which every tourist would like to see.Constructive ConceptThe structural design for the Disaster Prevention and Education Centre includes mainly the use of reinforced concrete and steel. The Center will be divided into various sub structures depending on their regularity in plane. Each sub structure will be designed with shear wall concept for the horizontal loads. Additionally visible steel frame walls, which will increase the horizontal stiffness of the structures, are to be included in the design. For the steel elements composition in these walls will be used the girih lines concept. The roof will be a lightweight structure separated into a number of diaphragm parts. The roof parts will be consisted of space frame structures forming the triangular diaphragms. The connection between the separate diaphragms will be rigid where appropriate. The two sub-structures of the Planetarium will be designed again from reinforced concrete (inner structure) and steel and glass (outer structure). The cylindrical structure of the shelter will be constructed of reinforced concrete.GENERAL URBAN CONCEPTThe urban development solution is based on the following main concepts:1.Peripheral development and creation of a rich, “pulsing” inner-space2.Creation of a sound barrier to the public inner-space zone3.Rich perspective views, observed from the inner terraced space towards the university and the rest of the vicinity4.Photo voltaic panels at the top of the building5.Water space6.Open outdoor areas for public activities and eventsARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CONCEPTThe building has linear structure with multi-functional spaces, intertwined with new age technologies.Visual perception:Following the principles of the urban model, the building is closed to the boulevard and open to the inner space. Since the terrain has a long shape, our sоlution is a building with similar proportions to that, moved out south as much as possible, towards the big boulevard. From the inside the building is completely open, welcoming, merging the indoor and outdoor activities of the centre. Open parking is situated between the boulevard and the building. The large canopy in front of the building allows for various meetings, entertainment, fun activities, etc.FUNCTION AND SPATIAL RELATIONSThe linear structure of the building is composed by triangular joint rods stucture, spanning 20 and 33 m. Roofing is visible in the interior and perceived as a cover under which other functional volumes are placed as buildings within the building. It is a three-floor building, with no underground level. A large, once again linear in shape entrance hall receives the visitors. It is common for both centres - Desaster Prevention Centre и Educatoin Centre, their main entrances situated to the north. There are complementary entrances from the parking, leading directly in the entrance hall space. The Planetarium is articulated outside the volume of the two centres and is connected to the second level of Disaster Prevention Centre. Information Centre is situated on the lower groundfloor level, as well as Children Centre, bookstore, souvenir shop and exhibition area.Public spaces as entrance hall, reception desk, exhibition area, cafe and Education Centre are situated on the groundfloor level. Payed zone comprises Disaster Prevention Centre, exposition area, planetarium and a Garden of Elements with a cafe-bar. The Education Centre halls are freely accessible, but allow for control of entrance when necessary.Payed programs with Disaster Prevention Centre, along with the planetarium and the cafe-bar are found on the second floor. There, on another inner terrace the mediateque is situated – over the cylindrical volume of Shelter, access being provided by the outer console staircase, spiralling around it. Adjoining on the same terrace, administration premises are placed, having a separate controlled entrance from the passage to the parking on the groundfloor. The third level at elevation +15,00m shelters Science Club and a partaining restaurant with and open terrace viewing the sea.
