Dining
Table + Earthquake Shelter
Retrofitting
the dining table to become an earthquake shelter
The
proposed design fix is inspired in the persons that survived long days under
the debris in the Haiti
earthquake and in the persons that perished waiting to be rescued.
Project Description
The
proposed design fix retrofits the generic “post and lintel” dining table to be
an earthquake shelter, and consists of two main elements:
1.
A Diagonal Bracing Mechanism which is adjustable and manually activated.
2.
A Survival Kit Mechanism under the table with strategic items for the aftermath
of an earthquake.
What does it fix and why?
The
safest place in a house during an earthquake is under the dining table.
However, its typical “post and lintel” structural nature is not suitable for
seismic activity.
This
contradiction is solved by the proposed Retrofit Mechanism which exponentially
increases the chances of preserving human lives during an earthquake.
