Dinh Design Store is a modest yet ambitious project situated at the heart of one of Ho Chi Minh City’s most iconic heritage sites, the Independence Palace. The location imposes strict constraints on preservation while constantly challenging designers to balance the integrity of a historical monument with the demands of contemporary use. The design, therefore, had to achieve high spatial efficiency within a compact footprint, while preserving the collective experience and honoring the heritage values of the site.
The design strategy of “Furnitecture”, a hybrid between furniture and architecture, is applied to Dinh Design Store. LAITA Design envisions a spatial approach where the boundary between object and structure becomes increasingly blurred, opening up a new way of thinking about interior design. Rather than separating furniture from architecture, the interior elements themselves become part of the structural system, optimizing space, adapting to user needs, and enhancing spatial interaction. The proposal introduces a highly structural solution: a unified system of wooden shelving and mezzanine flooring, precisely fitted into the existing volume, which measures 3.4 meters wide, 8.3 meters deep, and 5.6 meters high.
This decision effectively doubles the usable floor area, allowing for greater functional diversity within a limited space. To ensure the intervention remains visually light, a reflective ceiling panel system is introduced on the ground floor. This element is not merely aesthetic, it produces an optical illusion that doubles the perceived height, enhances natural lighting, and mirrors the activities below, amplifying the vibrancy of the narrow interior.
The shelving systems, extending seamlessly from floor to ceiling and connecting both levels, not only maximize display capacity but also serve as structural supports that reinforce the mezzanine floor. This integrated dual-function approach allows furniture to assume the role of architecture. The existing floor is covered with carpet, a non-invasive solution that helps define functional zones, introduces material contrast, and improves acoustic performance within the store.
All spatial interventions are executed under strict conservation guidelines: no permanent or direct alteration is made to the original structure or finishes of the Independence Palace. This project represents the effort of Cōllective Studio, the operator of Dinh Design Store, to create a contemporary retail environment that is efficient, flexible, and contextually sensitive, maintaining the integrity of a heritage setting while embracing the dynamism of modern design.
