Taking it back – Old School.
Our client was to set up a modern Dim Sum restaurant with a unique take on the traditional ideas of Dim Sum. Dim Sum Scholar was to present tasty Chinese delicacies in a very modern way using ‘old school’ style.
Our Solution
Fu Manchu (a character in novels from the early 20th century by British author Sax Rohmer) was often how Chinese were perceived and depicted in the West in the early part of the 20th century. The character, Fu Manchu was used to portray humour in the design and to capture the essence that this old school character brought to highlight the new style of dim sum. The idea behind Dim Sum Scholar is really a mix of east meets west and tradition meets modernity. The art-deco design and retro colours that we used, take dim sum out of its comfort zone and dusts it off to present a modern take on this quintessential Cantonese tradition. The transformation lifts dim sum into a new light that is attractive to young professionals as well as older customers.
