Rather than attempting to conceal
the difference between the old and new elements, we adopted a dynamic approach
where the past and present are combined to create a new icon with multiple
layers. The intervention is a statement
of balance in the re-use of heritage buildings by introducing new contemporary
architectonical elements for its cultural purpose and improving its outstanding
qualities.
The key aim of the project was to
maintain the original volume, while at the same time developing its own
sculptural quality. A new glass curtain façade is placed on the edge of the irregular
volumetric block, enhancing its monolithic presence and also creating a new boundary
for the foyer.
A louver-based media façade is
applied to this structure in order to replace the large movie posters which
currently occupy large amounts of façade, allowing new possibilities in the
communication of media contents, transmitting a powerful message of innovation and
defining a visual identity. In addition to the traditional function, it also allows
the continuous display of multiple movie trailers, special events such as video/art
installations, exclusive background scenario to the Moscow Film Festival and open air cinema sessions in the summer.
The original lettering remains in
the foyer´s ceiling, still visible from the surroundings behind new layers of façade.
The architectural language of the new
building embraces the existing concepts of plinth and access, creating one
historically accurate version of the building.
