…me looking at you looking at me
looking at you looking at me…Arpad Baksa’s submission to the
2011 New York City Dining by Design event is a provocation designed to call to
attention the eyes of judgment that are carried by everyone.
the viewer:The human
sensory receptors are mechanisms that connect the SELF to his/her surroundings. Sounds, smells, tactile sensations, and
sight serve as data to inform the SELF about his/her immediate
environment in order to define the present condition of SELF.
the view: Is what we see really there at
all? Because how do we see
“ugly?” How do we see “weak?” How do perceptions become confused with
representation? How do perceptions
transform into judgments that sever the very connections that define SELF, to the point of alienating SELF or others from society?
the viewee:Arpad Baksa has designed a dining
environment meant to provoke SELF-judgment by creating the sensation of being judged. Whether you are eating at the table or
just passing by as a spectator, the seating positions of the table forces SELF to question: am I the one
looking, or am I the one being looked at?
Agents of provocation are present
to further stir the pot of reflection.
The ever-bubbly Lorelai and sweet Tenley are seated at the table and
dressed for anything that the night may promise. Or are they?
Ursula, not known to be shy, basks in the attention while Martina
silently looks on.
You are ready to judge, but are
you ready to be judged?
