Dining By Design is an annual charity fundraising event sponsored by
the Design Industries Foundation Fighting Aids (DIFFA). The event
features a dinner where patrons dine at over 60 tables and dining areas
that are each designed and showcased by different architects, interior
designers and fashion designers. The designs vary from the novel to
the whimsical, but all must fit into an 11-foot square area. The
2007 New York City Dining By Design event took place February 24-26,
2007 and marked the first stop on DIFFA’s 10 year anniversary
calendar. Arpad Baksa was invited to participate as a designer
with only a single month to prepare, but he accepted without hesitation
despite the tight schedule. To select a theme for the dining
experience, Baksa relied on inspiration from his recent trip to Mexico,
and chose a beach theme. This impetus opened the doors of formality,
and allowed him to explore new ideas not typically associated with
dining.Baksa coupled the beach theme with a picnic atmosphere,
and fleshed-out the design using items and materials typically found on
the beach. A floor-bed of beach sand was a must, and although the
implementation would be difficult, the authenticity and merit were
undisputed. The table and seating furniture were considered through
many different sketches and options, and even eating on a beach blanket
was seriously debated. Eventually, Baksa’s ideas culminated in two
surfboards, each resting on two logs, while the seats would be similar,
yet smaller logs. Accoutrements included a picnic umbrella, kerosene
torches, flower arrangements, plastic beach toys with buckets, pails,
and shovels, and toy seagulls which were suspended above. The entire
scene was then placed against a printed beach backdrop featuring white
sand, blue skies, a light-up toy sun, and photos of each member of his
beach-going design team.
