Atelier PRO made the design for the new building for the Research and Diagnostics Center (RDC), which is part of the Amsterdam UMC (University Medical Centre). . The building with offices and laboratories on the Van der Boechorststraat, is approximately 22,800 m² and is part of a larger, future expansion of the VUmc complex.
The building is flexible in design as a future-proof accommodation for the so-called 'ADORE' project. ADORE stands for Amsterdam Oncology and Neuroscience Research and involves a new way of conducting medical-scientific research in which the use of the synergies between oncological and neuroscientific research is central.
On each floor there is a mix of laboratories and offices. Due to the flexible design, these can be arranged in various ways. In close consultation with the departments of Pathology, Clinical Genetics, Oncology and Neurology, a layout was created with concentration workplaces, consultation workplaces, open workplaces and office spaces. The mix allows researchers to quickly switch from research in a laboratory to working at a desk.
The building is organized around an inner courtyard, which serves as a central meeting place and brings light, air and space deep into the building. In the exterior, a distinction is made between the facades facing the street and the garden and facades at right angles to it. The street and courtyard facades are designed with a framework of sand-colored glass fiber reinforced concrete, giving them a solid and robust appearance. The concrete returns in the transverse facades, but pearl grey aluminum prevails.
In the interior, a subdued use of color and materials was chosen. Light colors in combination with wood create a quiet and warm atmosphere.
The adjacent atrium is a design by Studio Hartzema.
