studio MAKINA creates a Δ shaped garden house in the southern suburbs of Athens
Δ(house) is a private residence which is located in a serene neighbourhood of Attica, Varkiza, in a small plot area surrounded by nature. The plot area lies in between mountains that cover a significant part of the area providing a rocky and grassy landscape, and the endless sea. The house takes full advantage of its natural tranquil surroundings.
The architecture of the house is inspired by the principle of “Δ(x)”, meaning “the change in movement” in mathematics. The intention of this particular layout was to create a synergy with the human body movement into space, inspired by Aristotle, who first assessed that space is a product of the intertwined relationship between body and objects.
The program of the house is developed in relation with the clients’ needs who asked for a small living space strongly connected to the outdoors. Taking into account those needs we developed a residential program which accumulates on the ground floor the more extroverted uses of the house and hides at the lower floor uses such as bedrooms and secondary uses, where we create a tranquil atmosphere suitable for rest and relaxation.
The forms that shape the architectural language of the house reveal the potential of human movement among them as well as their experiential interaction with them. The forms of the house create autonomous spaces of various scales within the residence which are placed in different levels so that they can be approached by the user from various routes and experienced by different points of view. The elements that form architecturally and aesthetically the house also constitute its structural elements.
The light grey concrete walls and the wide glass openings abolish the barrier between the inner and outer area as they create a wide open space giving the feeling to the users that they become part of the natural landscape. The formal and geometrical complexity of the house creates interesting and atmospheric light conditions.
