Deriving the inspiration from the nature the structure surprises with a volume that flouts between the spaces. Standing tall amidst the compact city scape, the prominent concaved shape in the facade has a softening impact on the surroundings making it a bespoke piece of architecture.
Devam carves a commentary on the beauty of its structure. Bursting from the 90° angled and perpendicular lines the concaved single element carves a sculptural quality through facade. The single element has a strong impact on facade and eventually the surroundings. It carves a relationship between inside and outside, making the dwellers feel more welcoming.
The north facing 40’ x 90’ sq.ft plot worked to an advantage in terms of planning and designing.
The site is located on the main road with elongated shape and a compact neighbourhood. It faces two different topographies, on left side there is a huge park and on the other side has a commercial building.
The main idea was to capitalise the north and green scenic view of park and eliminate the view of commercial space. Devam stands tall in its full glory and sophistication. It comprises of three storeys and a stilt floor. The concaved block in facade envelopes two storeys making it a masterpiece, opening towards the main entry from stilt floor to ground floor. In the three storied house upper and first floor balconies were made in a block and the idea was to scoop out a part facing directly towards the park.
The material palette comprises of exposed concrete. To define Devam more black as a colour palette has been articulately used in the edges. The main door follows the same colour palette of black with circular detailing.
The curve appears as an element that extends from outside to inside, generating lights and movement in an architecture whose base is governed by straight lines. Curve as an important element is used not just in facade but in interior as well. The inside outside relationship is strengthened by the use of same curved design feature and the use of same colour palette as well. Upon entering the house from stilt to ground a double height lobby greets in white beauty, with natural light falls from the circular skylights. The lobby is equipped with uniform and simple materials so as not to distract from the natural movement. The ground floor comprises of double height lobby, dining area, drawing room, master bedroom and a powder room. A humongous dining table with water gently falling into a trough occupies the major space. The openness is such that artificial source of light marks the presence only after dusk. The manicured landscaped courtyard is well visible from the lobby. The flight from lobby goes to first floor with custom made kitchen with veneer ceiling matching to the visible element on wall. Apart from kitchen the floor comprises of son’s bedroom in front. The bedroom balcony adds a highlighting element in facade. The smoothness of the same is taken on wall with curvilinear concept. The wooden rafters in the ceiling add an interesting element. The colour palette again casts the magic.
The second floor is comprised of another master bedroom and daughter’s room. The two prime areas are divided by a green open to sky courtyard, adding a touch of naturalness inside. A space of meditation that analyses the relationships between the human being and nature through architecture of simple lines that plays with the curve and the natural light. The views from the bedrooms are magnificent. The openness inside the house is totally in contrast to the compact surrounding. Client wanted glimpses of nature from the rear side bedrooms hence the green courtyard serves the right purpose and creates a micro climate.
Here the air moves from lower level to higher creating thermally comfortable zone. The opening on the ground floor level (from formal sitting area) allows the air to circulate in double height lobby and eventually exiting from the open to sky courtyard
Terrace is the liveliest space with party lounge, spa and open terrace. Most animated action takes place here with lush green surrounding on terrace and live music.
