Designing beyond Borders
As the world adapts to new challenges, people are reimagining their residential properties to accommodate the changing needs. A new trend emerging in interior design is distance design where the designer and client are geographically separated however, can come together to plan, implement and finish design projects. Interior designers are connecting with global clients to create impeccable design.
Keren Gans, a prominent Interior Designer in Israel, has mastered international design projects in France, Israel, and the United State. As a professional designer, Keren ensures that all of the design elements reflect both the client’s interests and design preferences as well as maximizing design function and adaptability. Designers are essential for turning property dreams into a reality for individuals and families across the globe.
After living in the United States for over a decade, a young family with three children decided to move to Israel. With the purchase of a new house in the suburbs of Tel Aviv, their plan of creating a warm, familial, and authentic living space could be realized. In order to fulfill their dreams, they relied upon Keren’s design expertise. The scope of the design consisted of modifying the kitchen layout, adding customized furniture and cabinets, adapted lighting plans, selecting furniture for a detailed layout, and staging the finishing touches.
A unique aspect to this design project were the logistics of the design elements. Typically, the designer can select design pieces in person before purchasing. However, for this project, Keren collaborated online with the family by shopping for and selecting items on American websites so that the clients could purchase and ship the items in their shipment to Israel. Although, this method is less conventional, the end result was a contemporary sophisticated design perfectly blending color, texture, and function into a stylish and child-friendly home.
The main entrance is a vital part of design as it impacts the flow into the residence. For this project, Keren designed a ‘L-shaped’ custom-built cabinet made of oak with graphite-black painted facades. It is multi-purposed functioning as a coat closet and a bench with additional storage underneath for children's school bags. This cabinet makes it easier for the family to keep a welcoming and organized entryway. The finishing touches to the entry are a simplistic lamp design and sculptured rounded mirror made of iron adding an extra dimension to the space.
An essential element of the design was to modify the kitchen layout to better fit the needs of the family. According to Keren, "It was very important for the family to have extra storage space as well as a large seating area to accommodate all family members." The kitchen island was designed with varying heights to increase versatility and function. This design modification allows for maximium storage, as well as providing additional dining space with an open flow into the living and dining rooms. In order to "warm up" the white kitchen area, an oak wood countertop adds warmth and texture to the kitchen counter balanced by black Nordic wooden chairs. A combination of colorful ethnic dishes and light green bistro chairs peeking from the kitchen terrace add splashes of color, balancing all materials and colors in harmony.
In the center of the dining room is an ‘Arles rectangular dining table.’ This elegantly styled table was first introduced in Paris in the 1930s, and has since become a classic. The extra-long table is made of Brown Walnut and comfortably accommodates 12 people, creating a perfect space for hosting family dinners. To complement the table, colorful wooden Scandinavian chairs were selected to lighten up the space and give it a sophisticated modern look. In order to offset a low ceiling, Keren selected a French designed ‘Petite Friture’ Vertigo pendant light to provide a ‘chic’ yet elegant look to the dining room as the light adds an airy movement with shadows and light casting ribbons on the wall.
One of the most prominent design elements in the living room is the cast iron bookcase. The bookcase was a collaborative design with furniture designer Arik Ben Simhon and interior designer Keren. The customized size of the bookcase was specifically built to fit the exact measurements and needs of the space. According to Keren, "It was important to create an impressive element with a modern design, dominant yet relatively light and organized.” The living room is furnished with a rich brown leather sofa and two mustard upholstered modern
armchairs. A small cluster of oval shaped wood coffee tables sit on iron legs exposing more of the floor area enhancing an open and airy ambience. A Moroccan barber rug anchors the living area and colored cushions featuring ethnic and geometric patterns complete the warm, harmonious and cohesive design.
The inviting family room is designed in a unique ‘throwback free style,’ featuring modern and vintage pieces creating a fun ambiance for the whole family. It is a room that sparks the imagination with retro games and childhood action figure pictures bringing smiles to both parents and children. The entertainment cabinet and floating hive shelves provide ample storage for all the family games, toys, and treasures. The geometric patterned black & white rug with three round tables ‘floating’ in a Nordic style complement the practical and fun family space.
The master bedroom features a luxurious king-size bed upholstered in brown dark leather, a repetitive color anchor motive utilized throughout the house. In order to soften and lighten the design lines, a colorful geometric rug was placed under the front edges of the bed. The bed is surrounded with end tables and a dresser that features a three-dimensional geometric facade. The wall niche features natural oak shelves to add warmth and space to the design.
The children's rooms were furnished with simple designed wood and metal furniture pieces to provide flexibility to adapt to the children needs. Each bedroom utilized floating wall shelves to maximize space and highlight the hobbies and interests of each child. The minimalist design is intentional to leave open space for playing, for studying, and relaxing in their own space. A bonus to the design is the optimistic goal of keeping the rooms clean and organized.
