The Shixinjie District is at the heart of Jiangshan's old
town, with a well-defined urban fabric. The streets and
alleys radiate like the bones of a fish, most of which
were built before the Republic of China era and are still
in use today.
Within the site, a variety of buildings from different eras
and styles have been preserved. These include historic
buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, the first
collective housing complex in the early modern urban
area, as well as self-built and extended structures by
indigenous communities.
The project adopts a sustainable and progressive
preservation and renewal strategy, emphasising
holistic conservation, while introducing vital nodes at
specific locations to stimulate community life. It also
aims to improve essential local community services,
ultimately achieving sustainable regeneration in a winwin
situation for all parties.
