After standing on Derby's campus for 54 years, Derby's Technology building came down on August 7, 2013, reduced to rubble within a few hours.
The original building, adjacent to Sarah Derby Hall, was erected in 1959 to serve as Derby's science center. In 2002, a new Science Center opened across Derby's Main Street, and the Technology building became home to two computer labs. By the end of the following week, construction commenced on the new Innovation Center, scheduled to open in January 2014.
The Innovation Center will provide a flexible space for "outside the box" thinking and collaborative learning that fosters creativity and innovation. The Center; designed by Olson and Lewis Architects, will be 800 square feet larger than its predecessor. Technology will play an essential role in giving students opportunities to create large-scale group projects in rooms that can be transformed with movable walls.
