The refurbishment of this former warehouse, first build in the 1920’s, has been completed in 2009 by Architectslab. The complex contains two office spaces, ten lofts and three apartments. The reason for this variety in functions finds its origine in the original lay out of the complex. At the Ulensstreet, - the front of the project - the townhouse provides access to all inhabitants through a semi-open gate, which shows the pathway running through the public courtyards towards the other streetside - the Vanderstichelenstreet - which forms the entrance of the parking space. The townhouse was transformed into three apartments. In the centre, between the two courtyards, a second block contains the office spaces and four lofts. The latter block at the Vanderstichelenstreet consists out of six lofts and a communal roofterrace. The original date of construction - the 1920's - has definitely had its influence on the style elements used in the project: a mixture of Art Deco and Modernistic details were found throughout the townhouse and warehouses. These were welcome influences in designing the existing and new spaces for the project. The usage of materials, color pallet, lighting, etc were all chosen in function of the already present elements. This way new and old not only co-exist but are compatible in the most positive way.
