Del Lago Academy (DLA) is a college and career preparatory biotech magnet school of choice for 800 students selected to attend through a combination of application and lottery. DLA offers a curriculum of career and technical education programs focused on biotechnology and medical sciences. DLA will provide students an opportunity to meet the workforce needs of Escondido’s growing medical science and bio-technology industries.
The campus provides students the ability to experience an atmosphere similar to the collegiate and/or career institutions they will attend as they progress in their educational careers. The design focuses on designated collaboration space for project-based assignments and dedicated meeting areas to encourage partnerships with higher education and industry leaders. A cafe style dining area with varied seating, lighting, and LCD displays replaces the traditional cafeteria. A flexible use fitness center takes the place of a typical weight room. Conveniently located near local healthcare and biotechnology industries, students will be able to complete internships within their areas of study as part of their curriculum.
The planning of this new concept high school took place over four consecutive days and involved students, parents, community stakeholders, industry professionals, faculty and the design team. Participation in the process was both widespread and enthusiastic. The process began with a group site visit and was followed by a comprehensive site analysis and interviews to identify the project’s goals, facts and needs. The planning process successfully defined educational philosophies, analyzed growth scenarios, and optimized operational and financial objectives of the district.
Sustainability was integral in many of the design decisions. Features such as Photo voltaic shade canopies that are visible from below, signage throughout the school identifying sustainable features, and a web-based dashboard interface that students can access to view campus energy use, building water use and local weather information are all indicative of the level of consideration given to all aspects of sustainable design. DLA will exceed California’s Title 24 energy requirements by an estimated 33% and achieve CHPS certification.
While the school’s main intent will be to deliver high quality focus training to students, it will also serve the community through business training and meetings, adult education, a fitness center, fitness trails, and parent gatherings. DLA will be a model of excellence and will encourage students to excel in every aspect of their lives.
