Fermetti designed the interior architecture of Degroen Loft, a striking transformation of a former furniture factory into a flexible and characterful living space. Central to the project is a prototype kitchen for Atelier Belge’s modular Totem Kitchen system. A fully aluminium, Belgian-made solution that rethinks production efficiency and installation logic.
Working within a limited budget, the design embraces an honest and inventive material palette: metal studs, channelled polycarbonate panels, and spruce plywood form the foundation of the space. These everyday construction materials are deliberately left visible, creating a refined rawness that preserves the industrial heritage of the building. Through thoughtful detailing and strategic material reuse, the need for custom fabrication was minimized, resulting in an accessible and affordable renovation without compromising architectural integrity.
Colour plays a key role in shaping the loft’s identity. Inspired by Le Corbusier’s architectural polychromy, the palette adds depth, warmth, and spatial cohesion to an otherwise minimal framework.
Degroen Loft demonstrates how modularity, flexible design, and material clarity can deliver high-impact architecture at a modest cost. Offering a sustainable model for reimagining underused industrial spaces through intelligent design rather than excess intervention.
