The project is an entry for the "Defining a Creative Hub" competition. Entrants had to give their definition for the "creative hub" and propose possible location.Definition
Creativity is a state of mind. It’s the will to
express feelings and thoughts your own way. Some are creative because of a
personal need, creation makes them somehow free. Others’ creativity aims to
provoke other people and deliver a personal message of the author to them.
But whatever its origin or purpose may be, creativity
is incidental to every human being, whether it reveals itself in a painting, a
sculpture, in the way people dress or arrange their kitchen utensils.
Sometimes certain people need to be provoked to show
their creativity. That’s the purpose of Creative Hub - to provoke and push
people to realize, that creativity is inside each and every one of them, and all
they have to do is set it free.
As creativity itself has no limits, the place of
creation should not be limited by any physical borders as well. The borderline
between tranquility and creativity is virtual and its physical embodiment is
the Membrane. By crossing it, people make the step from reality to vision, from
indifference to creativity. The Membrane’s purpose is to make that step easier
by showing people, that creativity is easy and depends entirely on them.
Even though everyone walking through the Membrane
would realize, that the physical space “inside” and “outside” are practically
the same, people will surely feel much different after entering through it,
because the virtual border would have been crossed.
Designing the Creative Hub as a membrane and not as a
building aims to induce creativity by the power of surprise. By entering a
building, no matter of its design or appearance, people will know that’s a
place where artists meet, where art is created and culture is present, and
everything they see will be some kind of expected. The absence of physically
limited space of creation is a surprise and once people feel surprised, they
lose the feeling of indifference or apathy, which brings them much closer to
creativity.
The physical absence emphasizes the spiritual presence
of creativity.
Location
The Membrane can be placed anywhere – downtown or in
the suburbs, on a square, on a street, in a park or even inside a building.
Moreover, “membranes” should be put on multiple random places chosen
accidentally in order to provoke spontaneous creativity. This will emphasize
the fact, that creativity is present everywhere.
The image of the Membrane can vary according to each
particular location. As defining the appearance of the Membrane is also a
creative issue, it could also be left to the people themselves.
As the Membrane is more a virtual that a physical
border, its “inner” side can be designed to melt into the background,
underlining the physical absence of a border between indifference and creativity
(e.g. a mirror or a green wall covered with plants in a park).
