Rehabilitation cener for disadvantaged pregnant teenagers. Conceived as a Degree Project (Washington University in St. Louis, School of Architecture & Urban Design)- it is a REAL project = real CLIENT + real SITE + real NEED. Current status: FUNDRAISING... The project is based on a successful practice of
rehabilitation centers from the United
States known as ‘Second Chance Homes’.
Second Chance Homes are adult-supervised, supportive group homes or apartment
clusters for teen mothers and their children who cannot live at home because of
abuse, neglect or other extenuating circumstances.Women will stay at the center for up to 2 years. As
they advance through the program, they will change their living arrangements-
with each successive stage offering decreased levels of supervision and
increased levels of independence. The goal of the center is to facilitate a
smooth transition to independent living. The building will engage the public through two
programmatic elements: a chapel for the local community and a teaching center,
which will be open to visitors and social workers. As the women in the center
advance in their recovery, they will be offered increasing opportunities to
mingle with the public and readjust to normal interaction.Taking advantage of the existing landscape, the
building- a two storey structure- gradually reveals itself as a series of folds
that negotiate the topography from the high to the low side of the site. It
blends with the surroundings, yet defines a clear boundary. It shelters and
creates a place for inhabitation. The massing of the building is defined by a copper roof
structure. The wood deck under the roof dissolving in the landscape in the
north part of the building becomes a roof for the lower level as the topography
steps down to the southwest. This is where apartments for elderly (mentors) are
located adjacent to the apartments for young mothers in their last stage of the
rehabilitation process. As one proceeds inside, an undulating ceiling surface
of plaster, streaked with deep channels of natural light is revealed. The view
of the surrounding landscape is constantly present from within.Want to find out more about the project? http://www.archiprix.org/browser/?project=2334
