Angelos say “their sixty-seven suburbs are searching for one city”. The most famous, Hollywood, is also the oldest suburb in America. Built in 1923, the Hollywood sign was intended to stay for a year; however, with the success of the Hollywood Hills, developers created a marketing campaign based on the Hollywood sign. They began labeling each neighborhood with the same lettering, material qualities, and prominence as the original. It’s just that the Hollywood sign lost its monumentality; it was no longer a one-off or something unique. It was part of something else: an entire city scripted by its suburbs.
