De La Rue Technology Centre

RCKa has recently completed a new Technology Centre for currency producer De La Rue, located within the rural landscape of the Hampshire countryside.
Working in collaboration with workspace designers David Leon & Associates, the project involved the complete refurbishment of an existing office building with a large, three-storey extension to the south-east elevation. The internal spaces include a series of laboratories distributed across two levels, with large open-plan office and write-up areas on the top level with expansive views out into the treetops and the countryside beyond.
By encouraging scientists to relocate from the laboratory environment to the write-up space on the upper floor, we encourage interaction between different disciplines; it is in these moments - at the coffee machine, or in the third floor "hub" - that inspiration is more likely to come. Promoting continuous dialogue between research staff stimulates innovation and cross-pollination of ideas.
The building's external sculptural form of deep reveals and projecting sills sits within a sensitive agricultural landscape, and is the first building visitors see when approaching the site. The use of monolithic render for all external surfaces emphasises the changing light with the time of day, providing shade in the summer months and allowing natural daylight to penetrate deep into the plan during the winter.
