De Drie Wachters (Dutch) - The Three Guards.
Social housing corporation Woonbedrijf develops Space-S, which will be a new development of 400 dwellings in a high density urban setting for different target groups. The project incorporates several towers and blocks, which are connected by courtyards and community gardens.
In order to make a distinction between the community spaces and the public space, Woonbedrijf has issued a design competition for the design of a fence. Bygg Architecture has won the competition with the entry ‘The Three Guards’. Besides, Bygg has received an honourable recognition for the entry ‘S from Space’.
The name has derived from the three columns that provide access to the community garden of Space-S, in a bold yet informal way. They form a funny fellowship: the fat one, the tall one, and the small one. They let you pass friendly and you can even sit on their feet. At night they provide light and they hold on to the steel fences, which can be closed whenever necessary.
They are ‘wearing’ a warm green coat of vegetation, which gives you the experience of approaching a quiet courtyard garden. The reference of an old monastery garden wall comes into mind, which has been overgrown over time.
The design is a contemporary interpretation on the theme of a classical steel fence in between columns, in which composition and scale are in balance with the surrounding architecture. The columns and fences differ in width, height, distance from the road (and to each other), as well as in direction of their base and top.
