Construction of a new multifunctional complex with an underground parking garage, health center and ten apartments in the centre of Nijmegen. The building, which is situated on a corner plot, consists of a transparent substructure on which two massive brick tubes rest.
The corner plot in the popular residential area of Nijmegen-East has a footprint of approximately 550 square metres (30 x 18 metres). The design of the complex consists of a ground floor with offices and retail space, and ten apartments distributed over the two floors above. Below the complex lies a parking garage with storage rooms.
The ground floor accommodates a health center that occupies the entire surface of the plot. On top of this rest two double-height stony volumes which both cantilever the level below.
The cantilevered sides of these two volumes have a tubular section and contain the balconies of the apartments that lie further back. The facades with the balconies are completely glazed, while the other facades of the tubes have a more closed appearance. Due to this the dual orientation of the corner plot is emphasized; one tube opens up towards the Dommer van Poldersveldtweg, while the other looks towards the Tooropstraat.
A wide staircase transports the residents from the ground level up to the six metre wide ‘inner street’ on the roof of the ground floor. This street gives access to the apartments on either side. The apartments on the third level are reached from the street by typical ‘Hague’ porticos. The application of porticos over gallery-access highlights the intimate character of this complex and additionally guarantees more privacy for the residents.
The combination of front doors, porticos and outdoor spaces provides a broadening of perspecive and a lively atmosphere in this relatively narrow street. The materialization further contributes to the friendly character of this interior area: in contrast with the glazed facades of the ground floor and the stony volumes above, the interior street is largely clad with wood. Vertical and horizontal components are not only used as cladding, but also in the staircase, parapet, balcony railing and floor finish.
