In Zaandam, on the side of the Voorzaan river, where once was located the shipyard De Conrad, HM Architecten designed a residential complex of 320 houses and an underground car parking. The architectural concept is inspired by Kasbah Tadla in Morocco, where there is an old abandoned fort with a very rigid structure. This fort was occupied by civilians who created their homes in this structure with a church in the middle. This theme, individuality in an ‘orderly structure’, was used to design De Conrad. The complex consists of four elements: the Tower (70 m high), the Square, the apartment blocks and the dwellings. The tower stands out and creates a landmark at the entrance of Zaandam. All buildings have exterior cladding in brick masonry; the building with the apartments has a zinc cladding to accentuate the collective space.
