D+dd occupies a compact building at the corner of a community square, surrounded by an auditorium, residential
blocks and other structures from different periods. Originally used as a back-of-house support space, the building has
long been embedded in the everyday life of the neighbourhood, where pedestrian movement, social interactions and
community activities continuously overlap. When Sò Studio began the renovation, the site already carried a distinct
spatial identity shaped by years of use. The design therefore started with a close reading of the existing structure,
retaining traces of time while reorganising the relationship between the building, its surroundings and its users. Within
the limited footprint, the project focuses on the organisation of density, bringing together circulation, display,
information and atmosphere through intersecting routes, open interfaces and carefully layered spatial elements.
The interior accommodates the operational requirements of a retail store while extending its role into that of a small
public node within the community. A window-side platform establishes a direct visual relationship between the interior
and the square, allowing passing pedestrians, street activity and daily life inside the store to remain visible to one
another. This continuous exchange across the glazed façade expands the perceived depth of the compact space and
encourages moments of pause. Movable display units and a flexible exhibition system allow the layout to adapt to
daily retail operations, product updates and future pop-up events. The spatial approach also draws from Edward
Hopper’s treatment of light, thresholds and the quiet tension between interior and street. These qualities are
translated into the organisation of openings, circulation and visual pauses, allowing empty space to accommodate
shifting sightlines, movement and atmosphere.
Light-toned timber, brown lacquer, beige floor tiles, carpet, metal and coloured textiles form a material palette
informed by the experience of being outdoors. Variations in texture, reflection and colour introduce depth into the
restrained interior, recalling the relaxed quality of moving through a street corner or an open-air market. The
combination of materials creates a sense of openness and mobility while maintaining a clear spatial order. D+dd
ultimately operates as an adaptable framework in which the building’s accumulated memory, a flexible retail system
and the everyday rhythms of the surrounding community can coexist. Through this intervention, Sò Studio has
brought a small, previously overlooked structure back into active use, allowing it to respond to current needs while
remaining open to future change.
