Mothers To Mothers, an international organization led by founder and Director Pamela Parlapiano and Pryor Callaway created twin structures that serve as Daycare Center and Learning Center for the mothers and children of the Amacho Wato Village in Ethiopia. The mothers of the village were engaged starting with the decision to build a Daycare Center, to keeping the accounting books for construction and being an intricate part of the team that built the daycare center.Artist/designer Pryor Callaway, along with local builders, and Frehiwot Tadelle, designed two cylindrical structures that capture light and space as well as empower a community of mothers that were living a difficult life with dignity and grace. Parlapiano and Callaway conceived of the structures in a contemporary aesthetic to bring a sense of new optimism to the local community and the structures were built in a native, comforting vernacular, utilizing local techniques and materials as visible in the artistic and hand-crafted eucalyptus roof structure. MTM and Callaway wanted to give a safe place to leave their children while they worked and children who had never been to school a beautiful place to learn with educated teachers. Creating these beautiful spaces was the first step to telling people who were living anonymously that they mattered.
