Energy efficiency and sustainable
construction were important factors in the layout, material choices, and
equipment selection for this contemporary rural house.
A shaded courtyard and operable windows at ceiling level allow
cool air to enter at floor level and hot air to exit at the top. The
natural chimney effect keeps the house comfortable even during the
100-degree plus heat of Davis' summer.
Contemporary styling mixed with warm materials creates dramatic
living areas with a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.
Areas of drought-tolerant planting and a dry "riverbed" of stones contrast areas of lawn and existing vegetation.
Green features include passive cooling, daylighting, renewable
materials, energy-efficient appliances, low-maintenance exterior
materials, and low-water landscape.
