This is a new build residential development in Westend Vancouver, Canada. Anticipated construction start begins at end of 2020.
The focus of presentation is the Entranceway Canopy for the market housing tower. The basic L-shape geometry of the canopy was rationalized based on the UV Curves of the L-shape Surface to define the distribution of the secondary structural element, 3-5/8" Stock Glulam Beams of various length and depth CNC Milled on the bottom edge to create a morphing wavy aesthetic expression like water collectively in contrast with the rectilinear primary structural steel frame for the canopy.
The primary structural steel frame is structural welded to a concealed continuous intermediate steel beam for the curtain wall glazing system of the Tower Lobby along the long side of the canopy as well as the steel plate embedded on the concrete column behind the masonry cladding along the short side of the canopy. The structural concept is to have a rectilinear steel frame reinforced with stiffening members, of glulam beams that are both structural element as well as aesthetic element, to form a rigid structural membrane that can cantilever itself for the depth of the canopy away from the structural supports.
The canopy was designed and developed in Rhino. Drawings that include Fabrication/Construction Details and Profile Curves for the Glulam Beams were extracted from this Rhino Model which is also a Production Digital Model for the fabrication of the canopy. Anticipation of fabrication/construction start will be end of 2022.
