As the "City of a Hundred Lakes," Daqing is at a pivotal stage in its transition from an oil-industrial city to a modern, livable metropolis. Within this context, the rational development of lakefront resources and the enhancement of urban public space quality have become central issues in the city's renewal efforts. This project is located on the shores of Land Lake in the city's eastern core, on a site originally occupied by one of the five European-style buildings of the former "Wine Plaza." Due to its outdated appearance, cavernous interior, and single-function layout, the structure had long been in a state of vacancy and dormant value, failing to unlock its latent potential as a hub connecting the city, nature, and the community.
The renovation strategy adheres to the principles of "light intervention" and "structural preservation." The design completely respects and retains the original building's structural system, merely overlaying a lightweight skin of white corrugated and perforated panels. This elegantly re-pixelates and visually dissolves the building's mass. This ingenious facade renewal strategy not only responds to Daqing's "City of Ice and Snow" visual identity through contemporary design language but also makes the building appear to float on the lakeshore. The interior program has been updated to better meet the needs of contemporary urban life, transforming the once-empty, single-purpose space into a multifunctional "Urban Public Living Room" that accommodates an art gallery, the local brand "Meng Coffee," a public reading area, and cultural salons. In its details, the red metal components that serve as a core visual thread throughout the various levels subtly reinterpret and pay homage to Daqing's profound industrial history in oil.
Upon completion, the project's distinctive visual identity and immersive cultural experience quickly made it a social media phenomenon and landmark destination, successfully converting cultural value into sustainable commercial and social vibrancy. It has not only activated a previously neglected lakeside space, attracting a widespread return and gathering of younger demographics, but has also, through its all-day public nature, become a central venue for the daily leisure and community life of surrounding residents. This renovation acts like a precise "brand acupuncture," transforming idle assets with minimal intervention into a core engine driving district revitalization and elevating the city's cultural appeal.
