For its “PARIS 2009” Competition, ARQUITECTUM proposes a reinterpretation of “the new Moulin Rouge”, the most famous cabaret in the world and a symbol of what is an important aspect of Parisian life.
This competition was an opportunity to propose a new vision which, in the future, will remain an important symbol, as well as ensuring the continued quality of the show and the performance of the dancers.
The New School for the Moulin Rouge means to create a place not only for the students but also for anyone who wants to be a spectator of an in-out door performance. For this reason the architectural project should invite people to be part of a show that cuts with the common and known typology of a dance and performing school. As a result, the project is set out as an URBAN STAGE. As a curtain, the building presents a flexible and interactive façade that changes depending on the performance. A curtain that opens and let the dancers to be seen or a curtain that closes in order to become a scenography, an interactive screen for the dancers to perform in the outdoor stage. Finally, an open public space is set as a street tribune, a space where people can access directly from the street to contemplate, appreciate and enjoy the view from the different levels of the translucent classrooms placed as multiple stages, making the street live the spirit and emotions of the people inside.
